So this book starts off with main character Ismae. She was marked by death when her mother choose to poison herself to kill Ismae in her womb. Because of her mark of death her father treats her very poorly as do the other townsmen.
Her father sells her into marriage with Guillo, who is unaware of her baring the mark of death on her back. When he attempts to bed her on the night of her marriage he discovers these marks and treats her as the rest. And him not accepting this shame leads her on the road to the Covent of St. Mortain.
At St. Mortain she learns that she is immune to all poisons and she is to be a handmaiden to death, where she shall be guided to kill by His will. She befriends long term handmaiden, Annith and new comer, Sybella.
After years in training for the arts of seduction to the arts of combat, and of course herbs and poison, she has made two kills that both had Mortain's mark. Little does she know that both these kills are connected and leading her to Gavriel Duval.
Duval is investigating treason to the duchess of Brittany, Anne. He has however been unable to investigate the two men that may be able to offer information to who in the inner circle of the duchess is a traitor because they have been killed. This leads him to the Reverend Mother at the convent and hand of the duchess Chancellor Crunard.
Crunard and The Reverend Mother confess to Ismae that they believe Duval is the one conspiring against the duchess as he is favored ear of the duchess. She is ordered to become close to him and learn his secrets. And as Duval walks into this meeting he walks into this trap to spy on him.
Ismae is now tossed into a world of politics, where killing may not be the right move. She is falling in love with Duval and does not believe he wishes any harm based on his actions that she sees first hand. And he is showing her that death may not be the only choice of the damned and they may be able to free them selves of Mortain's will.
With the ways of politics, who could be the traitor?
To sum this up, I absolutely enjoyed this read. The writing style was completely captivating. And the story just yes more please. I mean assassin nuns! How could I not wanna read this?
From romance to political plots every word had me hooked.
